English clubs voted on what to do with VAR: will it still work in the Premier League?
After the project presented to the general assembly to debate the elimination of the VAR of the Premier Leaguethe clubs that make up the league voted almost unanimously in favor of maintaining the technological tool for the next season, at the annual meeting held this Thursday between the league’s clubs.
The vote, which it came out favorable by 19 to 1 to maintain the use of VAR, it was carried out at the initiative of the Wolverhampton Wanderers, the only club that voted against. According to the BBC, the proposal was supported by the accusation that the VAR “devalued the Premier League brand” as a result of various errors. In addition, he believes that it takes away emotion from the game, increases the time of the matches due to the interruptions it produces and encourages the lack of decision that it transmits to the referees.
In opposition, the institutions that usually compete in international competitions never considered voting in favor of this proposal. While the teams that usually lurk at the bottom of the table considered the measure counterproductive.
According to Premier League data, The elimination of VAR would cause more than 100 errors per seasonwhile ensuring that the technology, last season, only made five errors, which represents an improvement compared to the 2022-2023 campaign, when 11 incorrect VAR interventions were made.
However, the Premier League is not confident with the result of the assembly vote and confirmed that Reforms will be carried out so that VAR is better used in the competition. They hope that the complaints against them are null and void.
These changes include “maintaining a high standard for interventions, resulting in better consistency and fewer interruptions in the course of matches”, reducing the time of VAR decisions, thanks in part to the introduction of semi-automatic offside which is already used in UEFA competitions, improve the fan experience with announcements in the stadium by the referee after a decision and, where possible, replay of the play on the screens.
They also promised that they will work with the PGMOL (Premier’s college of referees) to improve the preparation courses on the VAR, emphasizing the speed of the process, as long as precision is maintained.
In addition, it is intended to carry out campaigns with fans to clarify the role of the VAR and also increase the transparency and communication of what happens between the VAR room and the referee, by reproducing it on television programs.
Under the line of improving the use of technology within matches, the Premier is already in the final negotiations to implement the semi-automatic offside system (SAOT), which received the approval of the majority of clubs during the last general assembly. The idea is that it can begin to be used near the end of the year, because some tests still need to be developed that finish guaranteeing the effectiveness of the tool in English football.
With this instrument, it is estimated that the average decision-making for offside situations would be 31 seconds faster than currently, added to the fact that the human aspect and the VAR would be separated from this work. This technology will be present at the Euro Cup, under the premise of continuing to expand throughout the world of football.
