“I’m a Dietitian and This Is When You Actually Should Weigh Yourself to Know Your Weight”
According to doctors, you should definitely stop weighing yourself every day. This is the only day to get on the scale to know your real weight with 100% reliability.
When should you actually weigh yourself to know your true weight? Most often, it is recommended to get on the scale in the morning on an empty stomach and completely naked to be sure not to add unnecessary kilos. However, if you are currently watching your figure, know that there is no need to weigh yourself every day. According to experts, certain key moments are real indicators to know if our weight has drastically changed or not. Since weight fluctuates a little every day, here are the two slots that would be the most effective to obtain a concrete and reliable answer, according to doctors.
How often should you weigh yourself for reliable results?
If we all have a healthy weight, it sometimes happens that a difference of several kilos is observed from one week to the next. The causes: a big dietary gap, a lack of hydration, temporary constipation, hormones or a lack of activity. This is why weighing yourself every day is not necessarily useful. As pointed out by our colleagues at Doctissimo dietician Jérémy Gorskie has just teamed up with doctor Michel Cymes to remind us that daily weighing is actually misleading. The ideal would be to weigh yourself only once a week or even over an even more spaced period.
“Once every two weeks would even be enough.” assures the expert. The only important point: weigh yourself on the same day of the week and in similar conditions. We also learned that there is an ideal day to weigh yourself. Contrary to what you might think, it is not Monday, because that is precisely when your weight has changed, particularly because of the excesses of the weekend. The best would be to bet on a day far from the previous weekend… either Thursday or Friday, in the morning, on an empty stomach and if possible after going to the toilet. In the same spirit, it is better to avoid weighing yourself near your period, because the days before the start of the menstrual cycle are often synonymous with water retention.
The art of getting on the scale to find out your weight
The last point mentioned by the experts: there is a very specific way to get on your scale to get your true weight. For a correct and reliable weighing, it is recommended to get on the scale gently, placing your feet flat on each side to distribute the weight in both legs. Be careful not to lean too far forward to look at the number displayed and therefore to stay straight. Finally, try to place the scale in the same place each time you weigh: on a flat surface and if possible, not on a rug or carpet. Also be aware that your scale may be out of adjustment. So don’t hesitate to do a quick check before weighing, every two weeks.
