Jane Birkin: her 20th century neo-Norman building, very dear to her heart, has been sold
Kachalou, Jane Birkin’s house located in a small town in Brittany, has just been sold.
In 1993, Jane Birkin bought herself a magnificent home that she named herself Kachalou in tribute to her daughters Kate, Charlotte and Lou. But despite the memories and the good times spent inside, the actress had decided to sell it, shortly before her death on July 16, 2023. The reason? The latter had become too big and too dangerous for her. Recently, this building dear to her heart was sold. Located in Lannilis, in Finistère, it includes 14 rooms, 9 bedrooms, 460 square meters of living space, 6000 square meters of land… All surrounded by a green space, with a breathtaking view of the sea. It is a villa typical of neo-Norman houses which was built at the beginning of the 20th century.
A three-story building in the heart of Brittany
A 5-meter bay window is located inside, as well as a grandiose dining room. The dining room occupied the ground floor, there were never less than 20 of us at the table. The veranda overlooks the river. Upstairs, the children were gathered in the dormitory…“, a friend of Jane Birkin had also specified to JDD. If you go up to the first floor, you can discover two bedrooms with private bathrooms, two other simpler ones, as well as a huge dormitory. Places where his children and grandchildren were able to sleep and have fun. On the second floor, three other bedrooms and a bathroom are there. And finally, when you go up to the top floor, you have in front of you the last two bedrooms, as well as an office.
The memory of his father
This villa also had a particular symbolism for Jane Birkin. It preserves within its walls the memory of her father, a Navy officer.I learned that a house overlooking a beach in Abers is for sale. This house overlooks a beach from where my father participated in evacuating English, American and Canadian airmen to England“, she had said on the show Brittany, Abers Road on France 3. Without forgetting his love for Brittany. “The places I know are only places that are dear to me, like this Saint-Marguerite beach, Portsall and its fish market, etc. For Abers Road, I tried to show everything that is charming to me. But the essence of the charm comes from the Bretons”, she had confided.
