Cyprus, crossroads of civilizations
It is important to know that Cyprus is a true crossroads of civilizations where many influences are mixed: Byzantine, Ottoman and Greek. And for good reason, the island was successively conquered by the Byzantines, the Ottomans, then integrated into the British Empire. It has therefore absorbed cultural elements from each era which are visible as much in its architecture as its traditions or its cuisine. Nicosia its capital, still bears the scars of this complex past: since the Turkish invasion of 1974, The city is cut in two by a demarcation line which takes the form of a 180 kilometer long wall.. To the north is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey, and to the south is the Republic of Cyprus, known as “Greek” and a member of the European Union. To go from the southern part to the northern part of Nicosia and vice versa, you have to cross this famous “green line” a UN-controlled buffer zone with border posts. To cross it, you will need a valid passport or identity card to present to both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot authorities.
