This new study on foods poorly classified in the Nutri-score reveals worrying results for our health
A new study on foods that score poorly on the Nutri-score makes a worrying link with the increase in cardiovascular diseases.
A new study that confirms the results of so many others. For a few years now, you have gotten into the habit of looking at this little mention on the products you buy in supermarkets. A, B, C, D… These grades are part of the Nutri-score, allowing consumers to know if what they are buying is healthy for their health. While some manufacturers question this way of rating foods, this new study will not prove them right. Researchers have indeed confirmed that Regular consumption of products and foods with a very low score in the Nutri-score was linked to a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, in their conclusions, revealed in the scientific journal The Lancet Regional Health-Europe, the scientists are unanimous: “Diet is responsible for around 30% of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases” recalls Inserm in a press release.
A study that alerts consumers
To carry out this study, several institutes and universities worked together. Indeed, experts from INRAE, Cnam, Sorbonne Paris Nord University and Paris Cité University, in collaboration with researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO-IARC) all wanted to “provide new scientific elements for the validation of the Nutri-score on a European scale” explains Inserm. In this study, the experts wanted to study the new version of the Nutri-score, implemented since 2024. “During the follow-up (12 years, between 1992 and 2010), 16,214 participants developed cardiovascular disease (including 6,565 myocardial infarctions and 6,245 strokes)”, the study indicates. In fact, the subjects had consumed on average more foods rated lower on the Nutri-score scale.
The Nutri-score should be checked when you do your shopping
Since 2017, this Nutri-score allows both “to quickly inform consumers about the nutritional quality of foods and drinks and encourage manufacturers to improve the quality of their products.” As a reminder, brands are not required to display these Nutri-score ratings. It is therefore very important to carefully check the rating displayed on the foods you consume. These indicators will be able to guide you and, above all, reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases.
